A689 Crook Bypass

Project team: Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Limited (Construction), Durham County Council (Client and Designers)

As part of the Balfour Beatty led Durham Strategic Alliance, the 1km-long £1.5million A689 Crook By-Pass was a 35-week contract located to the west of Crook Town centre. The new road eases congestion on the A689.

Site operations started at the turn of 2004. Construction works consisted of bulk earthworks, a culvert extension, demolition of a building containing asbestos materials, accommodation works for adjacent owners, road re-alignments, street lighting and a new roundabout on West Road.

The Wear Valley local authority and the Environment Agency were closely involved in the construction process, as the works are located adjacent to residential areas, an industrial estate and a beck.

Due to the close proximity of the works to Crook Town Centre, effective public liaison was a priority on this project. A regular newsletter was produced and communicated to local residents and other stakeholders.

The project was assessed as a Construction-only Award under CEEQUAL and achieved a 'Very Good' award in summer 2006.
